Kanyakumari-Kashmir - Day 18 - Umling La - Nurbula Top - Nyoma
Day 18 - Umling La - Nurbula Top - Nyoma (stay in Nyoma)
Kilometers Covered - 230 KMs
Walking - Less than 3000 steps
To avoid surprises like Khardung La - we checked our tyres at 5.30 AM - all good. We had bread toast & poha and left Hanle by 6.30 AM.
We passed through Photi La - wowww - 6th highest motorable pass in the world - we witnessed moderate snowfall for the first time in the journey. The fall enroute Khardung La the previous day was nominal and manageable, however this was more than nominal. We could literally feel the snow and it was spread on the roads as well :) We didn't accelerate because we settled for enjoying & experiencing the route :)
There was a big 3 road junction, you have to take a right to reach Chisumle Bridge (clear sign boards available) you wouldn't miss the turn. After reaching Chisumle bridge, a left turn would take you to Umling La - the highest motorable pass in the world - again, sign boards are clearly placed.
We were the first in car to reach the place and saw a bike - 2 travellers joining us. We spent a lot of time clicking pics and videos :) stunning views and the roads were well laid - however, you need to be over cautious for turns / upcoming vehicles and displaced road patches. It was COLDDDDDDD - gloves are a must to roam around the pass. We didn't suffer any oxygen issues, however - carry AMD tablets and drink lot of water - set time limits to drink water because it'll feed the required oxygen (even though if you're not thirsty)
We then decided to visit Nurbula Top - you'll see an off-road route to Hanle (2 KMs before Nurbula Top - you're the best judge to choose whether your vehicle can withstand such off-road journey - be it a 4 wheeler or 2 wheeler. definitely time consuming though) We skipped & proceeded in normal route
We stopped in Hanle junction for Maggi and Chai - Lunch :) Local boys were playing cricket - using stumps instead of bat - bazball kinda - highly energetic lads - and one of the catch was stunning. The route to Nyoma was full of roller-coaster roads and the experience you gain will last for lifetime :)
Settled in a small homestay near Nyoma around 4.30 PM. A jawan approached us - Krishnagiri, TN origin - and gave us tips to withstand climate (basically to drink water very often - you can even skip food, but water is quintessential for this journey) He gave us couple of Tropicana Mango 1 liter tetra packs and 4 biscuit packets. He refused photographs and denied the native food items we offered - ofcourse, we know the army rules. They're disciplined and there's no place for "'It's OK'' or ''Chalega" types.
Cooked rice to go with homemade paste, rices for dinner. Tight sleep :)
Luv,
Krishna & Mahadevan
