Kanyakumari-Kashmir Round trip - Day 15 - Srinagar - Sonamarg - Kargil
Day 15 - Srinagar - Sonamarg - Kargil (stay in Kargil)
Kilometers covered - 235 KMs
Walking - around 12800 steps
Arranged a Shikara Boat ride through the reference of the hotelier, spoke to him and fixed the timing - 8.15 AM. We took an auto and visited Shankaracharya Temple by 7.30 AM. Reached hotel by 8.15 AM - a quick breakfast (bread toast and masala chai)
The boatman came by 8.25 AM - one hour boat ride. You'll see get to see lot of shopping options during the shikara ride (pearls, shawls, perfumes, opportunity to click pics wearing traditional Kashmiri dress, imitation jewellery etc..,) We enjoyed the pleasant ride and avoided all the sales pitches :)
Checked out from the hotel - as expected for 14 days - I missed to take the mobile charging adapter, cable and smart watch charging magnetic cable in the hotel itself, realized it after reaching Kargil :( My only worry was on managing the scoldings from my wife for missing these basic stuff childishly :(
We went to the hidden waterfalls - Barwalla waterfalls on the banks of River Sind. Looked like artifical fall through the steps manually built for diverting excess water, however the environment surrounded by lot of trees and pebbles was superb!!
Stopped near River Sind - crystal clear water; spent some time playing inside the cold water
There was a selfie point near a canal - time to click few selfies :)
We then enquired with a jawan regarding Titanic Bridge - some travel enhusiast named it so and the jawan was not sure of the name :) Maps couldn't guide to us the location either. We then explained about the location and bridge details and he guided us to the path leading to the bridge. I assumed myself - 2 small waterfalls (Jack & Rose) merge near the bridge and hence it's Titanic Bridge :)
We stopped for an early lunch because the breakfast was very lite. Settled for a Thali and Chilli Panner :)
We reached Sonamarg - a crowded place. Many lakes are there, however vehicle traffic has been restricted. You have to walk or trek to reach those places - we skipped them to save time.
Sonamarg to Zojila Pass, the roads were bad and was full of truck traffic. We snailed through the ghat section enjoying the scenic spots and colorful valleys
Kargil War Memorial - a must visit place. A jawan took time and explained in detail about the war, musuem, video hall etc.., He also notified that it was a place close to every jawan's heart and instructed us not to touch anything in the campus. Shoes are mandatory to visit the memorial. The museum had many tools used during the war, pictures and memorials of all the soldiers involved in the war - goosebumps and respect filled throughout the visit - a hearty salute and prayer for all the soldiers
Luv,
Krishna & Mahadevan
